Podcasts are ofen referred to as Internet Radio Shows. Basically, podcasts are digital audio files that can be listened to online or downloaded to mp3 players. Strictly speaking, one could describe any audio or video available online as a podcast, but I stick to the stricter definition that only applies to shows that are published on a regular basis with a specific target audience in mind. For the purposes of this site, I concentrate solely on audio podcasts.
Many podcasts are started by an individual or business to establish and expand the expertise of the host. These shows can be likened to infomercials in that they provide information on a particular product or company. That's not to say they are cheesy! There are many high quality and informative podcasts that fall into this genre. They are a powerful marketing tool. However, most of these podcasts are not open to advertising because it would be counterproductive to the primary purpose of the show.
An increasing number of podcasts are being developed that are more like traditional radio. They are created to provide information and entertainment to a specific target audience and are open to advertising that is relevant and useful to their target market. This is where podcast advertising fits into the picture.
